Why Does a Clogged Fuel Filter Kill a Healthy Fuel Pump?

Do Diesel Fuel Pumps Fail Differently From Petrol Fuel Pumps?

Diesel systems fail on different terms.

Diesel fuel pumps and injection pumps run at far higher pressure than petrol in-tank pumps, and are more sensitive to water than to heat. What Should You Test Before Replacing a Fuel Pump?

Do not condemn the pump first.

Test in this order before replacing a fuel pump: the fuse, the relay, the wiring for voltage drop at the pump connector, then fuel pressure at the rail against spec. A pump that reads full voltage and still fails a pressure test is genuinely faulty. One that never sees full voltage has an upstream electrical fault instead.

  1. Fuse. Check it before anything else. A blown fuse looks exactly like a dead pump from the driver's seat, and it takes thirty seconds to rule out.
