How Does a Workshop Know Which Timing System an Engine Has?
Don't guess from the badge on the boot.
Confirm the timing system from the timing cover itself (metal and oil-wetted for a chain, lighter and dry for a belt), from the manufacturer's own service documentation, and from the engine code stamped on the block, not from the model name. The same model name can span several engine generations, each with a different system.
Three checks, in order of reliability:
- Cover material and shape. A chain typically runs behind a metal or alloy cover cast close to the block, sealed with a gasket or RTV sealant because it's sitting in oil. A belt runs under a lighter plastic or composite cover bolted on externally, because it needs to stay dry.
- Service documentation. The manufacturer's own workshop manual or parts catalogue will state the timing system for that exact engine code, not just the model.
- Engine family and engine code. Stamped on the block. Cross-reference this against the manufacturer's parts system rather than assuming from what generation of the model you're looking at.

What Are the Warning Signs of Timing Chain or Timing Belt Failure?
The engine usually tells you before it breaks.
Warning signs include a rattle on cold start that fades as oil pressure builds, a whine from a failing tensioner or idler bearing, ignition timing that drifts under load, and camshaft-to-crankshaft correlation fault codes. On a belt, look for surface cracking, glazing and missing teeth, all signs the belt is close to sudden failure.
Chain-specific symptoms:
- Cold start rattle. A metallic rattle for the first few seconds after starting, quietening once oil pressure reaches the timing chain tensioner. Gets longer and louder as the chain stretches.

- Fraying at the edges. A sign the belt is running misaligned, often because a guide pulley is failing.

One job, not two.
