What Do Misfire Codes Like P0301 Mean, and How Do You Confirm the Cylinder?
The code names the cylinder. It doesn't name the part.
OBD-II code P0300 means a random or multiple-cylinder misfire, and the codes that follow it identify one specific cylinder each, the final digit matching the cylinder number so P0301 is cylinder 1 and P0302 is cylinder 2. The code confirms which cylinder misfires, not whether the coil, plug or cable is at fault.
A scan tool reading P0301 only tells you where to look. From there, the swap test is the cheapest confirmation step available. Move the suspect coil, plug or cable to a cylinder that's running clean, then clear the code.
If the misfire, and the code, follow the part to its new cylinder, the part is confirmed faulty. If the misfire stays on the original cylinder after the swap, the fault lives elsewhere, most likely the plug, the cylinder's compression, or a connector at that position.
